Why replace your valve stem seals?
Valve stem seals control the tiny amount of oil that lubricates the valve guide. As the FPM rubber hardens and loses elasticity with age and heat cycling, oil begins to seep past the seal and down into the combustion chamber.
Common symptoms of worn stem seals include:
- Blue-grey smoke on startup, or after the engine has been idling
- Gradually increasing oil consumption with no visible external leak
- Oil fouling of the glow plugs
- Accelerated carbon build-up on the valves and in the intake
Because replacement requires removal of the camshafts, stem seals are almost always done as part of a wider cylinder head job — a head refresh, a timing chain replacement, or a performance camshaft and valve spring upgrade. Doing them at the same time saves a second teardown later.
