Crankshaft Timing Gear for BMW M47 / M57 Diesel Engines
A German-made Febi Bilstein replacement crankshaft timing sprocket for BMW's 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0 litre diesel engines. Febi Bilstein is a long-established German aftermarket manufacturer producing to original equipment specification, and this gear directly replaces BMW part number 11 21 7 788 982.
This is a dual sprocket — it carries both a 21-tooth and a 20-tooth row, driving the primary timing chain and the oil pump / secondary chain from the nose of the crankshaft.
Why replace the crankshaft timing gear?
The crank sprocket is the drive input for the entire timing chain system, so it takes constant load every revolution. Over high mileage the tooth profile wears and the chain no longer seats correctly, which accelerates wear on everything downstream.
Signs it needs attention:
- Chain rattle or slap from the front of the engine, especially on cold start
- Timing deviation or camshaft correlation fault codes
- Visible hooking, pointing or uneven wear on the sprocket teeth
- A stretched or noisy timing chain — the sprockets are almost always worn alongside it
Because reaching the crank sprocket requires the front of the engine to be opened up, it should always be replaced as part of a full timing chain job rather than reused. Fitting a new chain to worn sprockets will chew the new chain out prematurely.

Important Notes
- Only replace as part of a complete timing chain service — new chain, tensioner, guides and sprockets together.
- Crankshaft front seal and front cover gasket should be replaced at the same time while access is open.
